Tulip chairs in space.

In September 1966, the first episode of Star Trek premiered on American television. The same month and year saw the premier of another, rather short-lived, science fiction show, produced in West Germany. Raumpatrouille – Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion (literal translation: Space Patrol – The Fantastic Adventures of the Spaceship Orion) lasted only for 7 episodes, but still has a cult following in Germany and the rest of the world. And while Star Trek had the iconic Chromcraft swivel chairs, Raumpatrouille was pretty much an mcm lovers dream, with set pieces from the likes of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames, George Nelson and Eero Saarinen. The show can be found on YouTube, with English subtitles, and if you’re still not convinced, I will leave you with this scene, demonstrating how we’ll all be dancing in the future. Get practicing!
